Depict Initial Planning

Depict is a worldwide film competition where participants send in 90 second shorts telling a story with the chance to win a £1500 prize and a host of other exclusive prizes, as well as industry recognition.

For our piece, we settled on an idea of a young girl going to sleep when she begins to hear scratching on her wall, and cries as though there was another room next to her. Seemingly used to it, she calls her father into the room who raps on the stone and tells the voice to "Stop bothering my daughter" with a cheery look on his face. The noise stops, the girl sleeps and in the finishing scene we are shown that the room next to the young girls is a cell, and locked in it is a prisoner.

In order to come to this conclusion, we discussed our options which were ideas made by each member of our group in class.
The Brothers in the Graveyard: our first option was to have two brothers who visit a grave in a cemetery, dressed nicely, looking glum and mournful. One begins to recite a piece of loss and sorrow, whilst the other looks on puzzled. After a break, the confused sibling asks, "What was her name again?" and the other replies, "Oh, f***! We've got the wrong grave."

A Family and their Dog: our second option involved a family gathering around their slowly dying dog on the table. All look miserable, and how a family should when their dog is about to pass away. The father stands, makes a short joke about how he's going to "end this pity party" and shoots the dog in head, before looking around at his shocked family. "Well," he says, "Dog stew for dinner?"

Borman Nates: the third option we had created was a parody of Psycho, in which a female dresses as a male and attempts to kill a character who ends up in hysterics over their bad costume and psychotic facial expression.

We decided to follow a more grim story as we felt it would allow a more artistic approach, whilst comedies can be achieved on an extremely low budget and work very well, the horror and sadism of this piece would allow us to show our own creative talents more thoroughly and we felt it would teach us more about film creation.
